Tagiauē (2014)
S'inspirant des dessins sur tapis/gabbeh persans et étoffe d'écorce/siapo samoans, de nouvelles formes sur papier et textiles révèlent leurs lumières au contact de leur signification : elles sont le fondement d'un deuil et d'une mémoire culturelle persans, pratiqués ici à Birrarung-ga. L'artiste assemble les éléments d'une composition commémorative comme le choix des motifs, l'incorporation d'eau de rose, de nourritures et de chansons dans l'espace de la galerie lors du vernissage.
Les œuvres communiquent le chagrin issu de la perte de la grand-mère, du grand-père et de la tante de l'artiste, assassinés dans des circonstances tragiques pour leurs croyances en 1983. Suite à la récente profanation de leurs tombes par la Garde révolutionnaire iranienne, l'exposition construit un lieu de repos temporaire, un espace liminal, témoignant d'histoires dissimulées, traumatismes cachés, et une pratique d'habiter et d'honorer le silence.
Drawing on Iranian gabbeh/carpet and Sāmoan siapo/barkcloth aesthetic forms, new bright works on paper and textile reference transnational mourning and cultural memory. Tagiauē places Persian mourning practices in Birrarung-ga, in the arrangement of motifs and incorporation of rose water, food and song in the gallery space and opening event.
The works communicate grief and loss relating to the artist’s Persian grandmother, grandfather and aunt, killed under tragic circumstances for their beliefs in 1983. Following the recent desecration of their graves by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, the exhibition constructs a temporary resting place, a liminal space, bearing witness to hidden histories, concealed traumas, and a practice of inhabiting and honouring silence.
